fertilize Canola for top oil content?
What is the correct population?
Learn how to pick the correct variety?
What is water injection?
What does Winter Canola do for future crops?
Roll
the dice twice with Winter Canola.
You have more options with bigger returns than any
other winter crop when producers move the rotation to include Winter
Canola.
Another good reason…Winter Canola is fully insurable across Kansas.
The following crops in rotation pickup on yield about 10%. This is a
bonafide break that is not sourced off farm.
You get soil fumigant qualities with Winter Canola.
You get more nutrients harvested from deep in the soil… from
previous years up to 8 feet deep with adequate moisture and soil
depth.
Rubisco Mercedes variety.
Pictorial Review:
Exactrix owner Greg Sederstrom at Goodland, KS on Jan. 14, 17,
Saturday Morn 8:00 AM….24 degrees F.
100 bushel average yields of Winter Wheat. TAPPS applied to wheat.
There are no nutrients applied to Winter Canola in the fall.
The surface soil is frozen and plant continues to grow.
The Winter Canola crowns look fine and have good turgor pressure,
ready for a daylight sensitive bolt.
The plant is alive and well with temperatures to -15 F with snow
cover.
This crop needs snow cover and it arrived on Sunday Jan. 15,
This crop is ready for side dress with Exactrix TAPPS, deep banding
to 8 inch depth, P-51C and CUE Mustangs in about 40 to 60 days.
This crop has 80 to 100 bushel per acre potential at $8.15 per
bushel. Winter Canola needs proper fertilization to make a good
crop.
This Winter Canola crop will allow double crop,
and soybeans can
follow if it comes off quick.
Exactrix® TAPPS at 120 lbs. N, 4 gallons APP and 8 to 10 gallons
Thio-sul® with Zinc.
Growth regulators have been used in the past.
Growth regulators are an Off label practice that has much value.
Two fungicides and regulators have been working in other locations.
Water injection in the planter row is not required with a pivot.
Water Injection at 50 gallons per acre on 30 inch is required for
dryland production to produce exceptional stands in 4 to 5 days.
Absolutely, the Winter Canola best stands
do result with water injection and a good stand will assure chemical
applications with water injection.
This crop is in a race to the winter freeze up with good crowns. It
must be right, only one chance to plant
timely with Winter Canola.
Set your planter at 40,000 to 50,000 population on 30 inch,
on 20 inch set the planter at 50,000 to 60,000 population.
Make sure you have seed that is planter quality,
big seed that has been sized by the breeder specifically for
the planter.
Make sure the seed depth is about 1.5 inch with the planter,
get the small seed in the deck for more even emergence.
Deeper seeding depths at 1.5 inch assure a more vigorous stand,
3/4 inch is not required with winter Canola. Spring Canola is
a whole different story.
No nutrients applied. The crop is singulated with a
planter to build bigger crowns. Avoid any nutrients in the fall. The
plant needs be hardy with no thin cell walls from solution 32-0-0.
Only use ammonium forms of nitrogen to get top yields and oil
content.
Big crowns have been setting in the dirt in the dirt for 2 months.
The crowns are key to high yields and proper plant bolting in the
spring.
This crop was planted in mid September. The small investment of
$8.00 per acre at 3 months and ready to go in the bin at the 9th
month.
The additional investment is $40 to $60 per acre of TAPPS, Water,
and a crop fungicide with copper and boron at petal drop.
If the crop does not make it through the winter,
you can roll the
dice again in the spring with your favorite corn variety right on
top of the Winter Canola rows.
A great place for corn is on top of the Winter Canola rows for
maximum rotational punch.
Winter Canola is a better bet than winter wheat under
irrigation, and wheat will be under pressure.
Winter Wheat will need to yield 200 bushel per acre to compete with
Winter Canola at Goodland, KS.
Classic, wonderful means
to raise the crop in soils that are 15 degrees warmer than
conventional tillage.
Winter Canola is built right here for the Bio Diesel
ADM plant 4 miles away, Goodland producers
are lucky.
Crush goes to Kansas and Colorado dairies to produce 3% more milk.
Make sure you use plenty of sulfur (Thio-Sul® is the best) and get
the top oil content, a premium is paid,
try for 44% to 46% oil content.
Yield monitors are not as good as, Protein
Monitors on the combine allow you test for fertility practices and
build next year’s maps based on protein and oil content.
Get a protein monitor and measure your site specific needs,
the best application maps built come from Airplanes,
Satellites, and Protein Monitors. The growing crop tells the real
story.
An irrigated scenario only,
A Strip Till bar is required for heavy residue when
planting….this will let the plant properly grow and intercept light
without the competitive effects.
Winter Canola, the plant is not purposely
bred to grow in heavy residue. The residue is the key to winter
survival, so planter row cleaners are a
good deal for dryland, strip till is ok
for pivots.
The plant is very light sensitive,.the
wider Orthman Strip till bar, wider as in
path of 10 inches is working width to allow light to set the plant
correctly.
More Light, and a better crown set at the
soil line with a cleared path, learned
well in 1983 and 84 with Yielder Drills seeding Dwarf Essex. Duff
Scuffers were used with water injection.
Don’t use a match, and always avoid
tillage or keep the plant protection system absolutely limited to
strip till..
The breeders work on black soil, no
residue, they select for the most hardiness.
You get the advantage of black soil breeding,
the selection that goes in the bag is ready for No-till and
questionable in tillage systems on Great Plains.
No-till wings again, since 15 degrees
warmer soil temperature is always achieved with residue.
Winter Canola is meant for No Till and banding nutrients in the
spring, Winter Canola starts twice.
Keep your costs low with a planter. Roundup Ready seed is not
required.
Pick your varieties carefully. Compile a list of fields that have
potential herbicide carryover problems.
Work with the best and source the highest quality seed, sized and
ready for the planter.
A powerful environment for Winter Canola in
No-till, turn on the pivot as soon as possible as this crop is going
to make a good yield and allow for a double crop.
Double crop should be reviewed if water is available.
That plant is growing the roots are moving sugars
from deep in the soil, the crown is
swelling up and growing and storing sugars,
getting ready for a daylight signal,
the plant breaks based
on March 20 daylight.
Winter Canola has deep roots, and it can
complement irrigated corn.
When Winter Canola bolts it is time to tune up the combine. You have
about 6 to 8 weeks before harvest, it
beats wheat to maturity, so get ready for
an early harvest.
The Winter Canola fall leafs are in the process of
releasing nitrogen for the spring bolt, as
they recycle. N-15 has been used to determine the fate of N. This
oil seed plant eats itself to make
for a good crop.
The crowns continue to grow in the winter even in the frozen soil
the crowns grown and expand, electronic photographing scanners are
buried in the soil. The scientist can measure the growth of the
crowns in the PNW.
You can measure crown growth with a set of dial calipers.
Two facts recently learned by scientists at WSU. Bill Pan’s PHD
candidates will be your teachers soon.
The next big bet, A
Mustang tool bar to band nutrients in March or late February.
This heavy duty tool is good to go for side dressing at 7 to 8 inch
depth, No-tillage, at 5 degree angle or with the rows.
The operator can crowd or adjust one opener close to the row,
if the crop is side dressed on the mark. 15 inch bands for 30
inch rows to 10 inch rows.
The Power Tool of Canola,
Exactrix TAPPS, Side dressing Mustang P-51CUE at Dick
Sterrett Farm. Jan. 13, 17. Load the
Thio-Sul® first and make protein and oil content.
Liquid APP/ATS/Zn,
the stainless steel, TAPPS tanks on inside of tracks. A unique
machine for making high oil content winter Canola with Thio-Sul®.
Positive down pressure on the wings is generated with
valving,
center and wing wheels to be added.
Weight is added to the center of the frame and transferred with
buried frame cylinders to the wings.
