Can Hydra-Hume take Exactrix users to the next level of crop production?

Nobody knows the answer but there are scientific reasons that suggest Hydra-Hume may be an especially good fit for Exactrix users.  Plans are in the works to find out.

Hydra-Hume is one of a family of products produced by extracting humic and fulvic acids from Leonardite or similar materials that are precursors to coal.

Humic substances are large complex organic molecules similar to the stable portion of soil organic matter.  Humic acids are very long-chain molecules with limited solubility and are dark in color (see chart below).

Fulvic acids are shorter-chain molecules with high solubility and are yellow brown to light yellow in color.  Fulvic acids generally are more beneficial for crop production.

Hydra-Hume is a liquid product extracted from Leonardite and contains 12 percent humic plus fulvic acids.

Humic and Fulvic Acids: The Black Gold of Agriculture.http://www.humintech.com/pdf/humicfulvicacids.pdf

Humic and fulvic acids can benefit plant growth in three different ways:

Physical Benefits: One is by improving soil physical properties such soil tilth and water retention.  Very large quantities of humic materials are required to provide this benefit in the bulk soil; however, improvement of soil physical properties may be possible in the application zone of banded applications, for example, where Hydra-Hume is co-injected with anhydrous ammonia and other nutrients.

Chemical Benefits:  Humic and Fulvic acids don't contain significant amounts of plant nutrients but a second possible benefit is making plant nutrients from other sources more available to crops.  This occurs via "attaching" onto various plant nutrients and thereby making the nutrients more available to the crop.

An example is acting like a chelate that protects micronutrients from forming insoluble compounds that are unavailable to the crop but yet release the micronutrients to the crop.

Another example is "tying up" calcium or aluminum that would otherwise react with phosphorus to make it unavailable to crops.

These types of benefits are likely more beneficial when humic and fulvic acids are applied in a concentrated band with other nutrients that are made more available to crops.  This appears to be a very good fit for Exactrix.

Biological Benefits:  A third way that humic and fulvic acids can benefit crops is through direct effects on chemistry and physiology within crop plants and micro-organisms.  These growth stimulating effects are not well understood and conditions under which they occur are not well defined.

Although both humic and fulvic acids can both benefit plant growth, fulvic acids generally are more beneficial.  A portion of humic acids converts to fulvic acids in a highly alkaline (high pH) environment.  Anhydrous ammonia retention zones are very high pH, initially higher than pH 10 (see graph below).

Therefore, it is projected that when Hydra-Hume is co-injected into an anhydrous ammonia retention zone that some of the humic acids will be converted to fulvic acids.  In anhydrous ammonia retention zones, ammonium is the predominant positively charged ion whereas in the bulk soil calcium is the predominant positively charged ion.

Humic and fulvic acids are more soluble in the presence of ammonium than calcium and therefore humic and fulvic acids are expected to be more soluble in anhydrous ammonia retention zones.  These factors are expected to give Exactrix users an extra benefit from Hyrda-Hume and hopefully can take Exactrix users to the next level.

                                                                              http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/soilfertility/currenttopics/Ammonia-SeedlingInjury_5_22_09.pdf

Field trials thus far are encouraging.  For example, in 2012 Kevin Medow, Polk County, Nebraska, co-injected 2 gallon per acre Hydra-Hume with anhydrous ammonia, ammonium polyphosphate, potassium thiosulfate, and ammoniated zinc on an 18-inch spacing.  The no-till, continuous corn was center-pivot irrigated.  Hydra-Hume (1.5 gallon per acre) was also broadcast applied with UAN to assist residue decomposition.  Average corn yield was 200.4 bu per acre with Hydra-Hume and 192.2 bu per acre without Hydra-Hume.

This 8.2 bu per acre increase (4.3%) was based on replicated 2-acre test plots with and without Hydra-Hume (see table below).  Note that there is only a 3 percent probability that the measured average yield increase was due to "noise" in the data alone. Yields in the test field in 2012 were lower than usual due to emergence issues, hot weather, and 15 to 20 percent green snap from a June storm.  Greater yield increases from Hydra-Hume are expected when growing conditions are better.

Stay tuned.  Plans are in the works for more field trials this year.

TAPPS and TAPPKTS with Hydra Hume Goes To The Next Level Of Performance.

Feb. 20, 13.

Guy J. Swanson
Historically speaking Leonardite (Hydra Hume) has been in use for 30 years.

With Exactrix TAPPS and TAPPKTS  corn, wheat and cotton producers can expect additional net returns of 4% to 10%....that is a lot of money in irrigated corn.

Hydra Hume works very well with APP. It is a good player providing many more exchange sites to improve P uptake and N is much more efficient due to higher CEC. K efficiency is also improved and Zinc and Copper also perform better since they are not tying up in the soil calcium.

Historically Exactrix producers are finding up to $150 more net income after the product is paid for...at $8.00 to $9.00 per gallon...about 1 gallon is used per 30 gallons of TAPPS, or TAPPKTS...NH3 plus APP,ATS, KTS and Zinc.

Producers with irrigated corn can expect about $16.00 per acre of investment in Hydra Hume.  Dryland wheat is between $4.00 to $8.00 per acre. Irrigated wheat is about $16.00 per acre. Cotton is about $8.00 per acre.

It has been proven to be effective in irrigated high value crops in Washington and California.

It is now very effective in irrigated corn, Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado.

Helena Chemical is the market maker assuring the highest quality product.

If you have plans to use the material you should contact Helena Chemical at the wholesale level or the retail level.  Helena will sell Hydra Hume to your fertilizer dealer.

You will want success the first time.  Therefore Helena will be involved.  Do not shortcut since we have only had the best of luck with Helena Chemicals, Hydra Hume, 0-0-1, 12% Humic.

Exactrix will pay for all STEEP test plots.

Exactrix will require consistency in the plots and therefore application rates will be determined by Exactrix in plots.

You can also move your understanding of the Leonardite (Hydra Hume) further ahead by renting a third product formulator from Exactrix.  Control is GS-3 or GS-2 or Trimble…or any other Can-Bus system.  TASC 6200 can also be used with a TASC 6100.

Rental of the 2KS system is combined with and timed to the 2KP or the 2KM. The 2KS system injects at the 2KP or 2KM at the BPOR in a mixer, high turbulence chamber just before entering the accumulator manifold...the Hydra Hume material is short term delivery of two seconds to the injection point.  The bypass return is back to a 100 gallon tank.

The 2KS also keeps other materials that may not be compatible with APP.ATS.KTS in the tank...but short term compatible at the injection point. Ammoniated Copper, Ammoniated Zinc, Oil of Essex,

The 2KS system allows producers to experiment with the third product in a Ramp Up design in each field.

Quick and very visceral plots are developed with the Ramp Up design...using Yield monitors...the data is not published. The Ramp Up allows producers to fine tune the product to their crops and soil types.

Good News...Finally a friend for Leonardite (Hydra Hume). TAPPS and TAPPKTS makes this material work with uniformity of Exactrix.   Triple Super Ammonization makes Hydra Hume and Poly Phosphate work to performance levels that have never been observed in Exactrix Banding. APP, ATS, and KTS rates need to reviewed due to the high crop availability.

Guy Swanson.

Vermiculated TAPPS and TAPPKTS banding at 7 inch depths produces record yields in 2012.

If you are going north of 300 bushels per acre you will find Exactrix TAPPS and TAPPKTS with Hydra Hume in your agronomy plan.

Mobile Chemistry of TAPPS and TAPPKTS can only be made on the go and formulated in low 1% CV bands

Break yield barriers in Corn and Wheat with TAPPS and TAPPKTS banded deeper and uniformly at speeds to 10 mph.

You leave the field with high confidence.

You leave an ideal seed bed with Mustang Openers banding deep at 7 inches.

You have the greatest potential with No-till when you leave the field confident every critical inch of moisture has been saved.

You have stopped the tillage....and you leave the field knowing stubble stands to snow trap the blizzard of snow.

You will be confident year after year....that you leave each and every field knowing that every nutrient placed band is uniform within 1% CV at a depth of 7 inches....every pound of NPKS is positionally located to meet the needs of the growing crop.

You may need to explain to a few other people that you leave the field knowing that Primary N is 166% more crop available, that Primary P is 200% to 300% more crop available and K is positioned to be 10 times effective than top dressed KCL.

Leave the field knowing that the machine is paid for in the first crop with average or better weather.

Leave the field knowing that if the weather does not cooperate your investment in a failed crop has been minimized.

It may take a couple of years or a lifetime to learn the value of No-tillage farming.

You have the mortgage lifting benefit of those that have lead the No-till Revolution with crop nutrients.

The Big Five.

1. Uniformity….. at 1% CV application using Mass Flow delivery 166% more crop effective N. P is 200% more crop effective and K
is up to 1,000% more crop effective when crystallized in TAPPS and TAPPKTS.

2. Geometry…… is improved to meet the needs of the crop using powerful root colony banding techniques of the most advanced
designs developed.

The Rotational Band Loading is improved by banding deeper for cereal root access over many years. The band
geometry of 7 to 9 inch depth is recommended in moist soil conditions.

3. Chemistry….Super Ammonization of TAPPS and TAPPKTS (750 degrees F)…Vermiculated with Hydra Hume to assure high CEC
in the band. Buffering of the band in liquid streaming flows allowing high crop availability.

4. Timing…..Go in tough conditions, cold and wet right down to 20 degrees F. Run on slippery slopes. Meet the needs of the crop in
95% of the cases. Band into growing crops timely.

5. No-Tillage….Finally a means to maintain soil life avoiding high cost tillage using deep banding openers such at the Mustang
P-51C. Get the soil micro-flora on board with uniform bands hidden away from the micro-flora at much deeper depths
and well below the oxygen level.

A Mustang Opener provides new life for the Deere 1895.... improved banding results...a trial...

Swiveling Mustangs have low operating cost and can band deeper than Deere 1895 openers.

Mustang has very low operating cost and self
sealing and allows the 1895 to operate as a bander only at deeper depths on narrower bands of 15,14 or 12 inch.

Over time 1890 and 1860’s can become banding tool bars since the higher operating cost Deere openers can be removed.

The term Vermiculated with regards to Exactrix TAPPS and TAPPKTS…
Tri-Ammonium Poly Phosphate Thio-Sulfate or Tri-Ammonium Poly Phosphate, Potassium Thio-Sulfate.

Hydra Hume application with TAPPS and TAPPKTS is to adorn TAPPS and TAPPKTS, embellished with improved Cation Exchange Capacity, forming Tri-ammonium Fulvate, formulated in uniform and decorated waves of crystals (waves of nutrient are vermiculated in a vertical soil column) using additional enhancement materials to improve crop nutrient uptake such as Hydra Hume.

Vermiculation of TAPPS indicates the addition of Hydra Hume, 0-0-1-12% Humic Acid to enhance performance in an Acid/Base reaction.

The Critical Reaction requiring NH3…. combining the pH shift of Tri-Ammonization with NH3 driving the high temperature reaction of neutral to acid pH polymers of Ammonium Poly Phosphate, Ammonium Thio-sulfates, and Potassium Thio-sulfates.

The Critical Reaction of NH3 converting Humates to Fulvates solubulizing carbon from the Hydra Hume forming root zone, crop available Tri-Ammonium Fulvate.

Utilizing Exactrix high pressure, orifice delivery of NH3, APP/APP/ATS/KTS/ micros plus Hydra Hume in a uniform streaming flow,

A reaction at an intersection of streaming flows allowed to deliver at high temperature reaction at a below soil surface depth…. Equals…. vermiculated TAPPKTS.

A field wide dynamic reaction generated in a forward motion of an injection machine applicator banding into the soil at 4 to 9 inch depths.

Made primarily on the go with mobile fertilizer process equipment using high quality soil opening tools that make surgical cuts into the soil.

Vermiculated TAPPS and TAPPKTS is not designed to be canned, bottled, labeled or shipped to a producer as a stand alone plant food material. Not a dry fertilizer. Not a liquid fertilizer.

Vermiculated TAPPS and TAPPKTS with Hydra Hume is a combination of Acid Base high temperature fertilizer manufacturing in a mobile dynamic field wide application.

Vermiculated means the Humic acid has been improved to be more crop available by utilizing NH3 at high pressure to solubulize the Humic acid carbon source and forming Tri-Ammonium Fulvate.
