Rolls-Royce has tested the 67MW UltraFan engine,
which runs on
clean SAF fuel and will save billions of dollars on fuel
In December 2022, we wrote about a new Rolls-Royce engine. It is
called the UltraFan. This year, the British giant tested the
propulsion system and has now reported on the test results.
Here's What We Know
Rolls-Royce has deployed the new engine at the Testbed 80 test
facility in Derby. According to the manufacturer, the UltraFan proved
to be at least 10 per cent more efficient than any aircraft engine
currently available. So far, that title belongs to the Rolls-Royce
Trent XWB.
The company believes the new powertrain will save billions of dollars
in fuel costs. The UltraFan has a power output of 67 MW, i.e. around
87,000 horsepower. The engine has a diameter of more than three metres.
Rolls-Royce says the UltraFan will be able to pull up to 45.5 tons and
reduce fuel consumption by about a quarter compared to the Trent 700.
The new engine runs exclusively on environmentally friendly SAF
(Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
UltraFan has already been certified, and it will appear in aircraft in
the next decade. In doing so, the company intends to use the
technology in existing engines to reduce emissions.
